Give NowNews reports today describe the massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck 80 miles off the eastern coast of Japan at 12:46 a.m. ET, triggering a dangerous tsunami. Two hundred to 300 bodies were found in the coastal city of Sendai, and the death toll from a 23-foot tsunami is likely to rise. Fires burned up and down the coast, and a ship carrying 100 people was swept away by the tsunami.
Violent tremors reached Tokyo, 240 miles from the epicenter. Large buildings shook violently, trains were stopped and the airport closed. In Tokyo and its suburbs, more than 4 million buildings were without power.
We have received confirmation that all Converge missionaries in Japan are safe, and thus far have received no reports of damage to Rengo (The Japan Baptist Church Association) churches, our ministry partner.
Converge World Relief is collecting funds to assist. Once needs are assessed, likely distribution channels include our Japan field council, the Rengo and other churches and ministries that meet physical needs and deliver a gospel witness. More will be reported as it becomes available.
