Can you imagine your parents making such an announcement?
How would you respond? With disbelief? Anger? Disrespect?
In our culture of abundance, this likelihood seems exaggerated, even
absurd. But to most people in the remote rural communities of the
Mambilla Plateau, Nigeria, this is a daily, painful and sobering reality.
The culprit? An annual phenomenon called “the hungry season.”

DELIVER HOPE IN ‘THE HUNGRY SEASON
Many people on the Mambilla Plateau are malnourished, and some children
die from lack of food. Often, with one living parent suffering from
HIV/AIDS, the kids stay out of school to work the farm for their
weakened parent.
In the hungry season, before harvest, the supply of corn dwindles to
nothing, and its cost escalates beyond the financial reach of most
villagers. So people are reduced to one meal per day — sometimes one
meal every other day.
In response, the Gembu Centre for HIV/AIDS Advocacy Nigeria (GECHAAN),
founded by Converge Worldwide (BGC) missionaries Art and Dorothy
Helwig, has distributed corn, rice and beans, along with cooking oil to
hundreds of the neediest families. The expressions of gratitude from
recipient families puts GECHAAN’s “New Tomorrow Project” into clear the
perspective. Without food there will be no tomorrow. |

What our gifts can do
Funds are needed to enable GECHAAN to purchase food during times of
adequate supply, and to store it until the desperate needs develop.
Your gift will also help to:
Purchase baby formula and powdered milk to keep infant children
alive.
- Purchase food to assist in the daily care of growing orphans and
vulnerable children.
- Empower farmers by teaching
improved farming methods and practices to increase the availability of
local food in the area.
- Support those who are living
positively with basic food to prolong their survival.
n Ship an already filled trailer of food nutritional packs to the
Helwigs.
Every year the need for food seems to be more pressing. More and more
children show signs of an insufficient diet to meet the nutritional
needs required to maintain a strong and healthy immune system.
Please consider a generous gift to this project, ‘Deliver Hope in the
